Die Krise
Mangel an organischen Bestandteilen verwandelt Boden zu Sand und führt zu:
Nahrungsmittelkrise
In 20 Jahren werden voraussichtlich 40% weniger Nahrungsmittel für 9,3 Milliarden Menschen produziert werden.
Schlechte Böden führen zu einem schlechten Nährwert. Das heutige Obst und Gemüse enthält bereits 90% weniger Nährstoffe.
2 Milliarden Menschen leiden unter Mangelernährung, die zu einer Vielzahl von Krankheiten führt.
Wasserknappheit
Ausgelaugte Böden können Wasserströme nicht aufnehmen und regulieren.
Mangelnde Wasserspeicherung führt zu Wasserknappheit, Dürren und Überschwemmungen.
Organisches Material kann bis zu 90 % seines Gewichts an Wasser speichern und gibt es im Laufe der Zeit langsam wieder ab. Das ist eine große Hilfe in dürregefährdeten Gebieten.
Verlust der Artenvielfalt
Nach Angaben von Wissenschaftlern sterben jedes Jahr rund 27.000 Arten von Lebensformen aus, weil ihr Lebensraum verloren geht.
Die Krise hat einen Punkt erreicht, an dem 80 % der Biomasse der Insekten verschwunden sind.
Durch den Verlust der Artenvielfalt wird der Lebensraum Boden weiter gestört und die Regeneration des Bodens verhindert.
Klimawandel
Der im Boden gespeicherte Kohlenstoff ist 3x so hoch wie der in lebenden Pflanzen und 2x so hoch wie der in der Atmosphäre, was bedeutet, dass der Boden für die Kohlenstoffspeicherung von entscheidender Bedeutung ist.
Wenn die Böden der Welt nicht revitalisiert werden, könnten sie 850 Milliarden Tonnen Kohlendioxid in die Atmosphäre freisetzen und so zum Klimawandel beitragen. Das ist mehr als die gesamten Emissionen der Menschheit in den letzten 30 Jahren zusammen.
Verlust der Existenzgrundlage
Tausende von Landwirten begehen Selbstmord wegen der Erschöpfung des Bodens.
74 % der Armen sind weltweit direkt von der Bodendegradation betroffen.
Schätzungen zufolge kostet die Bodenzerstörung die Welt jedes Jahr bis zu 10,6 Billionen US-Dollar.
Konflikte und Migration
Bevölkerungswachstum, Nahrungsmittel- und Wasserknappheit könnten dazu führen, dass bis 2050 über 1 Milliarde Menschen in andere Regionen und Länder abwandern.
Landprobleme haben bei über 90% der großen Kriege und Konflikte in Afrika seit 1990 eine wichtige Rolle gespielt.
Von der Französischen Revolution bis zum Arabischen Frühling wurden hohe Lebensmittelpreise als Grund für Massenproteste angeführt.
Lebendiger Boden
Wiederherstellung eines organischen Anteils von mindestens 3-6% im Boden

Save Soil Movement ambassador, Tseke Nkadimeng, is currently undertaking a 10 000 km walk across the country to catch the attention of curious passersby. This, with the aim of educating them about the current condition of the soil.
He says food currently produced in backyard gardens as well as on large scale farms, is not organic enough. “Most of the farms that we visited across the country, we did ask them their organic content and it’s sitting around 0.2-0.3%. That means that for them to produce whatever they are planting, they have to add more nutrients, more chemicals, to make the to make the plants and everything else to be strong,” Nkadimeng elaborates.
